Stone Calculation Formulas Explained
Method 1: Using Feet Measurements
Formula: cubic yards = (length in feet × width in feet × depth in feet) ÷ 27
Example Calculation:
If your project area is 10 feet long, 5 feet wide, and you want 2 inches of stone:
Convert depth to feet: 2 inches ÷ 12 = 0.167 feet
Calculate volume: 10 × 5 × 0.167 = 8.35 cubic feet
Convert to cubic yards: 8.35 ÷ 27 = 0.31 cubic yards
Method 2: Using Inch Measurements
Formula: cubic yards = (length in inches × width in inches × depth in inches) ÷ 46,660
Example Calculation:
Same project measured in inches:
120 inches long × 60 inches wide × 2 inches deep = 14,400 cubic inches
Convert to cubic yards: 14,400 ÷ 46,660 = 0.31 cubic yards
Converting to Tons
Formula: tons = cubic yards × stone density
Example:
For crushed stone (density 1.5 tons/cubic yard):
0.31 cubic yards × 1.5 = 0.465 tons
Stone Density Reference Table
| Stone Type | Density Range (tons/cubic yard) | Common Uses |
|---|---|---|
| Crushed Stone 1/4″ – 2″ | 1.4 – 1.7 | Driveways, pathways |
| Crushed Stone 2″ – 6″ | 1.5 – 1.7 | Drainage, erosion control |
| Cobblestones 4″ – 8″ | 1.3 – 1.6 | Decorative walls, edging |
| Rip Rap 6″ – 9″ | 1.7 – 2.0 | Shoreline protection |
| Lava Rock 3/8″ – 2″ | 0.65 – 0.9 | Mulch alternative, decorative |
| Boulders | 1.0 – 1.5 | Landscape features, retaining |
Pro Tips for Accurate Stone Calculations
Add 10-15% extra for cutting waste and settling
Consider delivery – most suppliers have minimum delivery amounts
Check local availability – some stone types may be regional
Account for compaction – stone settles over time, especially under weight
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How accurate is the stone calculator?
Our calculator provides professional-grade estimates based on standard industry formulas and stone density measurements. However, actual requirements may vary slightly based on stone shape, compaction, and project specifics.
What’s the difference between stone and gravel?
Gravel is a specific type of crushed stone, typically smaller and more rounded. Stone encompasses a wider range of materials including crushed stone, boulders, cobblestones, and specialty stones like lava rock.
Should I buy stone by the ton or by the cubic yard?
Most suppliers sell stone by the ton, as weight is more consistent than volume. However, some decorative stones like lava rock may be sold by the cubic yard. Always confirm with your local supplier.
How deep should I lay stone for different projects?
Pathways: 2-3 inches
Driveways: 4-6 inches
Drainage projects: 6-12 inches
Decorative ground cover: 1-2 inches
Can I use the calculator for different types of stone?
Yes! Our calculator includes density settings for all common stone types, from lightweight lava rock to heavy boulders. Simply select your stone type for accurate calculations.
How much does stone delivery typically cost?
Delivery costs vary by region and supplier but typically range from $50-$150 depending on distance and quantity. Many suppliers offer free delivery for large orders.
Do I need to put anything under the stone?
For most applications, we recommend:
Weed barrier fabric to prevent weed growth
Landscape fabric for better drainage
Gravel base for driveways and heavy-use areas
How do I maintain stone landscaping?
Rake regularly to maintain even distribution
Top up annually as stone settles or disperses
Weed periodically if no barrier was used
Wash with water to maintain appearance
Can I mix different types of stone?
While possible, we recommend using consistent stone types within a single project for better appearance and performance. Mixed stones may settle differently.
What’s the best stone for drainage?
Crushed stone (1/4″ – 2″) and larger rip rap stones provide excellent drainage due to their angular shapes that create natural void spaces.
How long does stone landscaping last?
Properly installed stone landscaping can last 10-25 years or more with minimal maintenance, making it one of the most durable landscaping options.
Do I need professional installation?
For simple pathways and decorative areas, DIY installation is feasible. For driveways, retaining walls, or complex designs, professional installation is recommended.
